Wet Dogs

Stepping through the veil the werewolf runners were already waiting kind of like huge wolfs but betters.  They cocked their heads at me my heart almost lodged in my throat as everything reminded me of Riordan.  The bright cracking of fire entered my eyes while I fought to remain in control I know my emotions were closely becoming unmanageable as they stepped back.  My hands glowed as lighting let lose hitting a nearby tree the Runners didn't jump my respect for them grew a notch.  Breathing in and out I slowly and painfully stopped my descent into madness.  I wondered what Brennan must of felt when he lost his true love world crashing down.  All thoughts of living go right out the door because all you want to do is follow them to the other side.  Oblivion is the kiss of death you want to embrace my thoughts strayed to this more and more.  The mercy killing the old tradition started looking good as my mind kept trying to connect again and again to his this was a new kind of misery every time the disappointment of no answer came back.  The world around me became crowded as my wraith brethren came to my rescue sensing my distress the shadows darkened the sky as they came from all directions.  Part of me took comfort of this another knew the disaster that would befall my mission if I let this happen.  I pushed with my mind and sent them away with words of thanks whatever beliefs about the wraiths I now knew them a little more intimately  Brennan's hackles was raised as he knew what was happening as a slow growl escaped his lips.  The wolves on the other hand sensed something but couldn't quite put their fingers on it but I had to give them credit their eyes darted to and fro sensing the wraiths near.  My hand strayed to my chest as I reconfirmed what I already knew was there his soul I carried with me.  Some how I stopped the chaos of my thoughts to conform to some kind of semblance of sanity.  Does a insane person really know he is crazy or does he think he is normal.  Brennan kicked me out of my thoughts as I heard his order inside my head.  Earth to Claire.  Come in Claire over. The humor of this didn't escape me as I turned my eyes towards him his mask on his features was firmly in place but I knew his daily tortured existence without her mirrored my own.  With that we were partners in arms if not in grief words unspoken passed between us as he nodded his head towards our company.

The uneasy looks that I got around them made me smile a little bit good this unhinged fairy should appear unpredictable makes the next encounters with them in my favor.  Lead the way gentlemen as I interrupted the whispers that was passing between them no doubt the comments were about me.  Oh well.  Can you keep up with us mortal we have to travel a distance to the water hole and just like that the soundtrack to the Lion King popped in my head.  The water hole.  I had to stifle a giggle knowing they might take offence to my odd behavior really even I was starting to doubt my sanity.  "Claire you must get a hold of yourself and keep your mind in the present we are here to ask a great favor of Aryan and you never know she could deny our request" his words of wisdom didn't escape my notice.  "I'm lost Brennan, truly and utterly lost,  how did you do it?  His reply didn't surprise me under his carefully composed exterior beat a heart just as tortured as my own.  "Not without a bunch of alcohol and the divine intervention of a friend who gave me a reality check. Claire my dear."

The howl burst threw the air with surprisingly force I had to stifle my own primal reaction cause I really wanted to use my wraith call and scream into the night like them as our voices joined and rose to a beautiful harmony.  Brennan's shake of his head and scowling features made me stick out my tongue honestly why was I being so petty.  The pack took off without warning I had to admire their ability to cover a lot of distance as I raced to keep up.  I saw the look of challenge pass in Brennan's eyes as he launched into a dead run covering ground that I have never seen.  His wolf form was a beautiful grey white not unlike his dog form.  I knew I was the last woman standing as I shook my thoughts again and took off as fast as I could.  I sensed they were all around me as the yips and yaps continued from all sides of me.  My heart and my feet became one as I raced around the obstacles in the forest knowing I needed to make up ground.  My present form wasn't as efficient as I would of liked but I was no shifter.  Blood magic came to mind as I recalled a spell that would help me as I traced faster and faster without me really knowing it.  I knew you would figure out a way to keep up with us I'm just surprised you took this long a mocking laugh echoed in my head.

Wrinkling my nose from the overwhelming wet dog smell no pun intended as I entered the local hangout at the water hole in the forest.  Beautiful cascading water flowed over rocks that held the cleanest mountain fed water.  The scenery was something out of a hallmark card my heart did this silly little flip flop as a familiar shape walked by my direction from the back.  The shape wasn't the exact same deep in my heart I already knew when he turned around to face me.  Disappointment quickly masked as the smile faded from my lips my heart in my throat I was close to losing it again.  Brennan's hand slipped into mine quickly squeezing it reassuringly my mind wondered if he has someone to comfort him.  Our eyes met again sympathy in his eyes made me want to slap him my mean thoughts traveling the length of our bond.  Smiling he stepped away carefully trying to hide his amusement knowing he was quicker than I was.  Damn his shifter existence Riordan and Brennan both had amazing gifts that were solely theirs I was just learning what Brennan's was.

Werewolves aren't known for their modesty as they walked in and out of the water completely oblivious of their nakedness.  Granted most bodies I happened upon by pure chance looked glorious.  I tried to not let that shocked look register on my face.  Breath Claire.  Breath they are aware the effect they have on you as the many smirks told me.  A water nymph walked up to me introducing himself as Chance the first one to acknowledge my presence.  The one that looked like Riordan from behind maybe it's because I miss him so. I'm looking for him in everyone I see and meet hoping against hope that he would magically show up in front of me.  A girl could hope that somehow I was specially enough for God to take notice and lend a helping hand.
